Dessie Eva Spann, age 95, passed away on October 18, 2020 at Barfield Health Care in Guntersville, Alabama.
Born March 1, 1925 in St. Joseph, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late David and Maudie Smith.
She married the love of her life, Hurshell Lee Spann on October 23, 1944. Early in their marriage Dessie was a seamstress for a Shirt Factory in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. After moving to Toledo, Ohio she found work at Autolite and later as a seamstress for National Canvas.
Hurshell and Dessie were long time members of Echo Meadows Church of Christ in Oregon, OH where they found many lifelong friends. In retirement, they were members of Pulaski Street Church of Christ.
She will be remembered for always being willing to laugh, her fierce competitive streak, being a relentless daredevil, chocolate gravy, and her deep devotion to Hurshell.
Dessie is survived by son, Timothy Spann and daughters, Robin Phillips, both of Brownsboro, Alabama; daughter-in-law, Claudia Spann of Whitehouse, Ohio; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurshell L. Spann; son, Ronald L. Spann; daughter-in-law, Marilee Spann; brothers, Fulton Smith, Guy Smith, and Felton Smith; and sister, JoAnn Smith.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 11:00 AM Thursday, October 22, 2020, with Jaime Stewart and Holly Spann officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Lawrence County, TN. Family suggests memorials be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
