Richard Henry Peters was born in Lawrence County, TN on September 2, 1928 and passed away on November 24, 2019 at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia, TN, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Mike and Gedear Peters of Lawrenceburg. Richard grew up in the Napier area of Lawrence County and was a long-time resident of Lawrenceburg.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Dunkin (Marty) also of Lawrenceburg. He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Dial (Dwight Garner) of Lawrenceburg and his son, Eric Peters (Carol) of Dothan, Alabama. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren; Christy White, Jonathan Morris, Demetria Dial, Luke Dunkin (Marissa), Blake Dunkin (Emily), Sophie Peters, and Laney Peters. He also had 16 great-grandchildren; Kolton, Kinsley, Chance, Abby, Carlie, Hudson, Ryder, Samara, Phynix, Axyle, Zeke, Ace, Lucy Kate, Weston, Charlie, and Harper and two great-great-grandchildren; Kessler and Kaibree.
Richard was a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed throughout Korea from 1952-54 delivering troops, ammunition, and “anything and everything” to the front lines. After returning to the states, he lived in Detroit, MI and Florence, AL for brief periods before returning home to Lawrenceburg permanently. After a dutiful 37-year career he retired from Murray Ohio Manufacturing in 1993 and spent his free time looking after his family and friends: mowing, performing handiwork, or simply visiting. He is remembered as a delightful man who never met a stranger and loved to tell stories of his adventures growing up a moonshiner’s son in the Tennessee hills or dodging enemy bullets on Old Baldy. Ultimately, he was happiest when surrounded by his large, adoring family.
“My father didn’t tell me how to live; He lived, and let me watch him do it.” Clarence Budington Kelland
