Mavis S. "Granny" Johnston

Mavis S. "Granny" Johnston, age 94, of Lawrenceburg, TN, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019 at NHC Springfield in Springfield, TN.  Mavis was born on November 9, 1924 in Lawrenceburg, TN.  She was the wife of the late Robert "Bob" Gentry Johnston for 61 years and the daughter of the late Thomas Elbert Shaffer and Velma Haskin Shaffer of Lawrenceburg, TN.  She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Effie Polk and Arah Smith.

Mavis was a graduate of Lawrence County High School and Draughon's Business College in Nashville, TN.  She and Bob married right after WWII on September 11, 1946.  They loved and lived most of their married life on Spring Creek where they raised their two sons on their farm.  A native of the Gandy community in Lawrence County, she was a member of Gandy Church of Christ and retired as a bookkeeper of B&W Auto Parts in Lawrenceburg after many years of service.  Mavis was an active member in the Lawrence County Farm Bureau for over 50 years.  She loved her family and treated them like guests and her guests she treated like family.  Mavis is survived by her sons, John T. Johnston (Bonnie) of Springfield, TN and Tim W. Johnston (Connie) of Lawrenceburg, TN; four grandchildren, Jennifer Johnston Evans (Joey) of Hendersonville, TN, Beth Johnston Baggett (Mac) of Springfield, TN, Andrew Wayne Johnston (Angela) of Murfreesboro, TN, and Mallory Johnston Smith (Colby) of White House, TN; four great-granddaughters, Ragan Baggett, Sara Evans, Katie Baggett and Gracie Evans; two sisters-in-law, Maggie Johnston of Lawrenceburg, TN and Adelva Sawyer of Jacksonville, FL; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  Those serving as pallbearers are John Johnston, Tim Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Joey Evans, Mac Baggett and Colby Smith.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Neal Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens at 1:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2019, with Bob Johnston and Jerry Taylor officiating.  Family suggests memorials be made to Gandy Church of Christ.
