Elmer was born in Hannibal, MO on September 25, 1935, son of Elmer Farrell Rummans and Mary Flick Rummans. He married Laura Loete Cary Rummans on May 1, 1970 and together, they raised five Children.

His family moved to Moline, IL in 1950 and Elmer graduated from Moline High School. While in high school he played football and was recruited by several semi-pro teams.

Instead of football, he chose to join the Army, enlisting the day after high school graduation.  He spent three years in the service, with most of his time spent in Korea in a helicopter.

Elmer worked for John Deere in Product Engineering for 35 years, holding various positions and traveling with experimental combines to many foreign countries.

After retirement, the couple moved to Florida, first for the winters and then built a home in North Port, FL where they lived full-time for thirteen years. They moved to Tennessee in 2013 to be closer to family.

Elmer enjoyed traveling. He liked yard work, especially mowing his large lawn in Illinois. He loved sports, and in particular, football. He loved to tell stories and could often be heard saying, “Yak, Yak - Point of story….”

His favorite thing to do was spending time with his family; Gregory Rummans, Chattanooga, TN, Christopher (Jen) Cary, Dover-Foxcroft, ME, Dana (Virgil) Mayberry, Rock Island, IL, Cathy Cary Cabone Leahey (Tom), Cicero, NY, and Steven Rummans (Gayla), Waterford, WI.

Grandchildren include, Robbie Neeb, Boone, NC, Ryan Cary, Dover-Foxcroft, ME, Michael Carbone, Albuquerque, NM, Mia Mayberry, Des Moines, Iowa, Luca Carbone Medrano, Cypress, TX, Anthony Rummans, Dunlap, IL, Kamaron Rummans, Fairbank, Iowa, Krista Knight, Kansas City, MO and especially with his nine great-grandchildren.
