Dr. Jean Waits Jones

Dr. Jean Waits Jones, age 81, of Hermitage, Tennessee, died Sunday, September 8, 2019, at NHC Brink in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.  

She was a native of Ethridge, Tennessee and retired from the Metro-Nashville School System.  She had previously taught at Campbellsville High School in Giles County, Pleasant Hill High School in Illinois, North High School in Nashville and after 44 years in the classroom, retired from Whites Creek High School in Nashville, where she was the girls basketball coach and cross-country coach.

She graduated from Summertown High School in 1956; attended Martin College in Pulaski; earned a BS degree from MTSU; a master’s degree from University of Tennessee; and a PhD in education from Vanderbilt University; and was of the Baptist Faith. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Paschal and Louannie Miller Waits of Ethridge, Tennessee; husband, Norman Hooper Jones; three brothers, Rual Waits of Yulee, Florida, Ronald Waits of Ethridge, Tennessee, and Tommie Waits of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; five sisters, Fannie Miller of Pulaski, Tennessee, Belle Mock of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Rubye Lee of DeLand, Florida, Avis Polk of Nashville, Tennessee, and Adean Wiley of Mt. Clemmons, Michigan.

She is survived by a daughter, Brittany Jean Jones of Hermitage, Tennessee; three sisters, Johnny Adair of Warren, Michigan, Anna Ruth “Sue” Downing of Madison, Florida, and Gerry Leding of Hermitage, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and very close friend, former high school student, and caregiver for several years, Susie Franklin.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Neal Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 10, 2019, with Thomas Mattox and Jo Ogg officiating.  Graveside services and interment will follow at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, TN.
